Airline Pajamas On Long Flights For Comfort Etiquette And Extra Relaxation

Dec 22, 2025 | Travel Guides

Flying in first or business class on a long international flight can come with a fun extra. Sometimes the crew gives you a clean pair of pajamas and tells you that you can change into them. In many first class cabins this is normal, and some business class cabins on long overnight flights offer the same thing.

We often get questions about these pajamas. Is it polite to wear them? When should you change? Where should you change? What should you wear under them?

Why We Like Airline Pajamas

We are always happy when a premium cabin offers pajamas, and we usually say yes when they are available. Many of us do not even sleep in real pajamas at home, but on a long flight, airline pajamas can make a big difference.

There are a few clear reasons for that.

Protecting The Clothes You Boarded In

When you travel, you usually pack only a few outfits. If you change into pajamas during the flight, the clothes you wore onto the plane stay cleaner and less wrinkled. You are also less likely to spill food or drinks on the clothes you want to wear when you land.

Changing into pajamas can also help your brain switch into rest mode. It tells your body, “Now it is time to relax,” instead of, “We are still rushing through the trip.” That simple change can make a long flight feel easier.

Comfort, Warmth, And Cabin Temperature

Airline pajamas are usually soft and loose. They do not squeeze when you recline your seat, and they are good for watching movies, reading, or trying to sleep.

There is one thing to watch for, and that is the temperature in the cabin. Some pajama sets are thick and warm. On planes without individual air vents, the air can feel hot. If that happens, you might want to skip the blanket, roll up your sleeves, or remove a layer so you do not overheat. The goal is to feel calm and comfortable, not sweaty and cranky.

The Fun Of Wearing Pajamas In Public

There is also the simple fun of it. A premium cabin is one of the only places where you can sit next to strangers, eat a proper meal, and even walk to a bar area while wearing pajamas, and no one thinks it is strange.

Most of us would never wear sleepwear into a normal bar or lounge on the ground. On a long flight, that same outfit suddenly becomes normal. Enjoying this little bit of silliness can make the trip feel special instead of boring.

Keeping Airline Pajamas As A Souvenir

The value of airline pajamas does not end when the plane lands. Many travelers keep them and use them again. We do this too.

At home, these sets often turn into loungewear, backup sleepwear, or lazy-weekend outfits. They are also useful if you have overnight guests who forgot to bring pajamas. When you put them on months later, you might suddenly remember a smooth overnight flight or a big trip.

For the airline, pajamas are a cost. For you as a traveler, they are a small, physical reminder of your premium cabin experience. They feel more personal than a boarding pass or a digital account statement.

Most of the time, you are allowed to keep the pajama set the crew gives you. Flight attendants usually expect that you will take it with you. The main exceptions are things like cardigans or light sweaters that are clearly meant only for use during the flight. These pieces are often collected before landing. If you do not know whether something is yours to keep, just ask the crew politely.

When It Makes Sense To Wear Airline Pajamas

A big etiquette question is timing. When should you change into the pajamas the crew gives you? Do you wait until you are ready to sleep, or can you wear them for most of the flight?

Our answer is simple. On a long flight where pajamas are offered, your comfort comes first. As long as you can go to the bathroom without getting in the way of boarding or safety steps, it is fine to change before or shortly after takeoff. When you settle in early, you do not have to struggle with a clothing change later in the dark or during meal service.

Some people say that passengers in premium cabins should “dress the part” from the gate until landing. We do not agree. You are in a cabin where the crew gives you pajamas and tells you to get comfortable. In that setting, it makes more sense to focus on rest than on looking fancy the whole time.

Once you are in pajamas, you can stay in them for a good part of the flight. You can relax in your seat, walk through the cabin, stretch near the galley, and even visit an inflight bar or social area if the plane has one. Ordering a drink in pajamas at high altitude is not something you do every day, and that is part of the charm.

When To Change Back Into Regular Clothes

There is one time when we strongly suggest changing back into your normal clothes, and that is before landing.

Walking through the arrival terminal in airline pajamas or very obvious inflight loungewear can feel strange very quickly. Many travelers only do this once before deciding they never want to repeat it.

A simple rule is to change back into your usual clothes about an hour before arrival, or when the crew starts getting the cabin ready for landing. This gives you time to wake up fully, wash your face, brush your teeth, and switch your mind from “sleep” to “arrival” before you deal with immigration and ground transport.

Where To Change Into Airline Pajamas

The next question is where to change. Should you always go to the bathroom, or is it okay to change at your seat if you are careful?

Most of the time, the bathroom is the best choice.

Using The Bathroom

Changing into pajamas in the bathroom is the most polite option. It gives you privacy, and it protects other passengers from seeing more than they want to see. It also avoids awkward moments for the crew.

When you go into the bathroom, we strongly suggest wearing shoes or slippers. Try not to go in barefoot or just in socks. The liquid on the floor is usually not clean water, especially later in the flight. You probably do not want that on your skin or soaked into your socks.

Changing In A Private Suite

If you are flying in a very private suite with a door that closes, you have a little more choice. During times when everyone has to stay seated and your door is closed, you might be able to change at your seat.

The key is that your body should stay covered the whole time. If you can slide the pajama top over your normal shirt, or change pants while sitting under a blanket, without showing any skin, then other people in the cabin will not be affected.

We are not saying you should treat your seat like a locker room. The main goal is to make sure other passengers do not see anything they did not agree to see. But if you manage to change clothes in a way that no one notices and nothing is exposed, then it is hard to say that you did anything wrong.

Why Seat Changes Often Go Wrong

Many people try to change clothes at their seat and misjudge how visible they are. We have all seen clothing changes go badly on overnight flights. Shirts get pulled up too high, bare stomachs show, and underwear appears where no one expected it.

These are not the travel memories anyone really wants. If you think there is any chance that you might expose yourself to your neighbor or to the aisle while changing, it is safer to go to the bathroom instead.

What To Wear Under Airline Pajamas

Do you still wear underwear or other layers, or do you treat them like regular clothes?

Treat airline pajamas the same way you treat any other outfit. Wear whatever underlayers help you feel relaxed and confident. Some people keep their normal airport clothes on underneath the pajamas. Others change into lighter underwear or remove a layer so they do not get too hot while sleeping.

As long as everything that needs to stay covered really stays covered, and no one can see what is underneath, the choice is up to you.

If you plan to walk around the cabin, visit the bar, or stretch in the galley, it often feels better to know you are fully covered under your pajamas. That little bit of extra confidence makes it easier to move around and enjoy the flight.
