For the longest time, I didn’t think much about my carry-on luggage.
As long as it fit in the overhead bin and held my belongings, I figured it was doing its job. I would buy whatever suitcase seemed reasonably priced and assume all carry-ons were basically the same.
Looking back, I couldn’t have been more wrong.
After years of dealing with broken wheels, sticky handles, and poorly designed compartments, I finally realized that the right carry-on can make a huge difference in how you travel.
Why I Waited So Long to Upgrade
I think a lot of travelers make the same mistake I did.
We spend hours researching flights and hotels but barely think about the luggage we’re dragging through airports, train stations, and hotel lobbies.
The truth is that your carry-on is one of the few travel items you’ll use on every single trip. If it’s frustrating to use, you’ll notice it over and over again.
I certainly did.
The Problems With Cheap Carry-Ons
Over the years, I experienced just about every luggage problem imaginable.
Some suitcases had wheels that refused to roll smoothly. Others tipped over constantly. One even lost a wheel in the middle of a trip, which was about as fun as it sounds.
The biggest issues I ran into were:
- Wheels that struggled on airport floors
- Handles that became loose over time
- Limited organization inside the suitcase
- Poor durability after repeated trips
- Constant frustration while traveling
None of these issues ruined a trip, but they certainly didn’t make travel easier.
What Changed My Mind
Eventually, I borrowed a friend’s higher-quality carry-on for a trip. The difference was immediate.
The wheels glided smoothly through the airport. Everything felt more organized. The suitcase was easier to maneuver, easier to pack, and surprisingly less stressful to travel with.
That’s when I realized that luggage isn’t just a container for your belongings. It’s part of the travel experience.
What I Look for in a Carry-On Now
These days, there are a few features I always pay attention to before purchasing luggage.
Smooth-Rolling Wheels
This might sound obvious, but it makes a huge difference. If you’ve ever sprinted through an airport with a stubborn suitcase, you already know why.
Smart Organization
I love having separate compartments that help keep everything organized. The less time I spend digging through my luggage, the better.
Durable Construction
Travel can be rough on luggage. A good carry-on should be able to handle frequent flights, road trips, and everything in between.
Lightweight Design
The last thing I want is to waste part of my baggage allowance on a heavy suitcase. A lighter carry-on simply makes travel easier.
The Carry-On Brand That Caught My Attention
As I’ve spent more time researching luggage, one brand that consistently comes up is Away.
What I like is that their products seem to be designed by people who actually travel. From thoughtful organization features to durable materials and sleek designs, they’ve clearly focused on solving common travel frustrations.
Their carry-ons and travel bags are especially popular among frequent travelers, and it’s easy to see why.
If you’re thinking about upgrading your luggage before your next trip, it’s worth taking a look.
Is a Better Carry-On Really Worth It?
A few years ago, I probably would’ve said no.
Now I’d say absolutely.
A quality carry-on won’t magically eliminate travel stress, but it can remove many of the small annoyances that add up over time. When you’re moving through airports, boarding flights, and living out of a suitcase for days at a time, those improvements become surprisingly valuable.
It’s one of those upgrades you appreciate every single time you travel.
The Travel Lesson I Learned Too Late
One thing I’ve learned over the years is that not all travel purchases are created equal.
Some things are nice to have.
Others genuinely improve the travel experience.
For me, upgrading my carry-on falls into the second category. It’s something I wish I had done years earlier, and it’s one of the few travel purchases that continues to pay off trip after trip.
If you’re still traveling with a suitcase that frustrates you every time you use it, it might be time for an upgrade.
Learn From Travelers Who’ve Already Tested What Works
One of the best parts about traveling more is learning what actually makes trips easier. The challenge is that many of those lessons only come after dealing with frustrating luggage, long airport walks, and gear that doesn’t perform the way you expected.
